Only the best grain whiskies aged in the best refill bourbon casks can reach the very respectable age of 50 years. Five decades of unhurried and contemplative maturation, in a cool cellar with the oak delicately interacting with the spirit, have given life to this exceptional whisky: still lively, fresh and very aromatic, without any sign of tiredness. As usual with grain whiskies, the delicate aromatic palette is meant for connoisseurs and it takes time to develop in the glass: first with whiffs of mint and camphor, and the buttery vanilla note imparted by the refill cask. But there is also beeswax, and a gentle touch of ancient wood furniture. At the palate it doesn’t need much water, because of its delicate nature, although just a drop will bring the cereal sweetness and the vanilla to the front. There are notes of medicinal herbs, green tea, a touch of liquorice root, propolis, and an ethereal quality. Only towards the end the tannic robustness imparted by 50 years of oak maturation, and a hint of white pepper, appear, but without any dominating bitterness.
