Our first ever experiment of this kind applied to this robust and unusual Speyside malt, and quite a long one: four years of finish in a cask of the richest and sweetest wine from Patricius, in the Hungarian region of Tokaj! The result is, as expected, stunning and intense. At the nose, the sweetness is not dominating: this distillery makes such a bold and aromatic whisky, that it still shines through. There is orange marmalade, plums and apricots, but the slightly piney aroma and malty firmness of the spirit is unmistakeable. The fruity touch from the Tokaji really explodes at the palate, though: again, candied oranges, marmalade, plums, raisins, ripe quinces and mirabelles, and a yummy pastry-like fatness, almost buttery. But the intensity and nervousness still betray the vibrant backbone of the whisky, and especially with water there is also a touch of acidity and tannins that makes it lively and never cloying. The finale is long, warm, fruity but also appetizing. Great for pairing with some aged blue cheese!
